May 2011 - Role Models

This month’s topic ties in very strongly to last month’s ‘Good Habits and Bad Habits’ post below... in very simple terms - other swimmers copy you! If you train well, race well and contribute to the success of the team in any way you can others will follow. On top of that, you’ll be getting a lot of praise and thanks from the coaches around poolside, which is always a good thing.

Coaches, swimmers, lifeguards and parents all have an affect on the other people around the pool area and it’s safe to say that Armthorpe has spent the past couple of years developing a truly great poolside atmosphere. One of the wonderful things about a club is that you can generate a great environment where people enjoy coming and where they know they are going to work hard and become better. The swimmers in lane 1 want to improve so that they can get moved up to lane 2, the swimmers in lane 2 want to improve so they can get moved up to lane 3 and so on. Naturally younger swimmers look to the older ones for an example of how to do everything – this means behaviour as well as swimming technique. I just want everyone to be aware; swimmers are looking towards you for some guidance of how to behave. This means in training and at galas.
