Who We Are
Background on the Club
Armthorpe SC is a Swim21 Skill Development accredited club and one of the largest teaching & coaching clubs in Doncaster. We provide a friendly, positive and encouraging environment for its members to achieve their goals.

The club has several different branches:

The Club uses the ASA's National Plan for Teaching Swimming utilising qualified teachers which provides children with the basic techniques needed to be safe and confident in the water, while achieving nationally recognised awards as they progress. There is also the added benefit that their teachers are aware of the skills and abilities needed to be a successful competitive swimmer, so they can identify this potential early and encourage children to stay involved once they pass all their teaching stages.

Once swimmers have achieved Stage 7 of the NPTS which must now be achieved through the DCLT (Leisure Centre teaching lessons) they have the option to progress to our newly formed 'Sharks Section' or 'Rookie Lifeguard' or 'Speed' sections. For Rookies, we follow the programme developed by the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) UK who are the leading provider for Water Saftey education, rescue techniques and resuscitation. Rookie has been developed in conjunction with the Amateur Swimming Association to compliment the National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Our Sharks section will further enhance a swimmers capability by continueing through the NPTS pathway.

The ‘Speed’ section has always been one of the most competitive in the area, challenging for top spot in several leagues and championships each year. We encourage swimmers with the desire and ability to progress through to the town’s elite training scheme, DARTES, where over the years swimmers affiliated with Armthorpe have had great success at regional and national level.

Our ‘Masters’ section caters for adults who want to swim with a group of motivated individuals to improve their techniques, stamina and/or speed (so they can keep up with their kids in the pool!!)

The People Behind the Scenes

Pete Hardy returned as Chairman in April 2010
after a "rest"  of 5 years following 13 years as Chairman (he probably needed the break!!). Pete has been involved with swimming for 30 years and during that period has been a teacher, coach, gala official and administrator so knows his way around club swimming quite well.

Assistant Coaches and Support Staff
The club would simply not exist with all the volunteers who give up there time every week. As with all small swimming clubs, no one gets paid but every member of the poolside team either has or is working towards ASA qualifications in teaching or coaching swimming.
The support staff list could go on forever, but to give you an idea of what goes on behind the scenes here are a few of the thankless jobs that are carried out - the Chairman, Secretary, Team Managers, Lifeguards, Treasurer, Events Secretary, Child Protection Officer, Swim21 Officer, Membership secretary and of course the parents who help out. Everyone who gives up their time is an integral part of the club and we are thoroughly grateful for the help!
