Barnsley League Round 1

posted 8 May 2017, 04:46 by Pete Hardy
On Saturday we had our first BML round of the year at Scunthorpe. For some of our younger swimmers this was their first League gala and they swam very well it was also a first outing for our new team shirts which added a splash of colour on the poolside. Talking of poolside everyone behaved and were very supportive of their team by encouraging each others swim.  A special mention for Ben Stilborn who is still in our Pre  speed section and came for one Freestyle team swim and  posted a very good 20.06 seconds - well done Ben. Scunthorpe had a very strong team out and were the eventual winners. We know this division is a tough one and  overall our team swam very well amassing 50 pb's and finishing a comfortable second.  Andrew Garbutt had 5 swims and came home with 5 pb's - great swimming Andrew. It was good to see Molly Grayson (our most experienced swimmer) back in the water and gaining us valuable points with her 6 swims. For me the swimmer of the day was Mark Hanson who stepped up to the plate without any hesitation  to swim up an age group with no notice at the end of the gala. He swam in his own age Freestyle team got out and swam in the Open 50m Freestyle  team and then went straight in again for the Cannon. For me that is a great example of a team player. Well done and thank you Mark. The race of the day was the Open Boys Medley which see-sawed between us and Chapletown before Jack Durose hung on for a win to Armthorpe. Jack's 50 m swim gave him a split time of 28.62 which is a 1.12 pb.
Final score was :    City of Sheffield  -  65    Chapletown  -  115    Armthorpe  -  141    Scunthorpe Anchor  -  171
